Summer Heat and Excavators – A Few Quick Maintenance Notes

Summer heat can shut down an excavator fast. Here are a few things we do to keep machines running on hot days – no fluff, just field notes.

Radiator first
Check coolant every morning. Same type only – no mixing. No tap water. Blow out the radiator fins daily. Dirt and seeds block airflow quick. A clean radiator is your best defense.

Easy on the hydraulics
Change filters on schedule – a clogged filter sends oil temps up fast. Look over your hoses. Cracks or bulges? Change them now, not when they blow. If the machine feels weak or sluggish, stop. Don’t fight it.

Avoid the heat peak
12-3 PM is brutal on machines and operators. Shift heavy work to cooler hours if you can. Long idling? Turn it off. Letting it sit and idle just builds heat.

If it overheats
Don't open the radiator cap hot. Let it idle 10-15 minutes. Then crack the cap, top up with coolant or clean water. Cold water into a hot engine = cracked block. Avoid that.

Most heat-related breakdowns are avoidable. Check, clean, adjust – and keep working.
